Getting started

With the coming new year, I'm proud to announce the creation of a new business I'm starting, ChainGauge.  This new business is focused around the manufacturing of the world's first gauge made specifically to measure anchor chain and cargo chain.

There are other 'slot' gauges out there, some even fit into your wallet.  What makes this gauge special, is that I've taken into account that galvanized chain is slightly larger due to the extra material that is applied to the stock.  Three eights galvanized chain doesn't measure 3/8 of an inch exactly, it's slightly larger.  For that reason, even if you use a pair of calipers, you can get confused as to what size is what, unless you reference a table.  I've taken the advertised diameters as stated on several major chain manufacturer's web sites, and built this gauge.  For non galvanized chain, the gauge is approximately 1/64 of an inch larger.  All this means is that the gauge fits nicely on non-galvanized chain, and tightly on galvanized chain.

It's also different from other slot gauges in that it's made out of durable Starboard plastic, with the numbers, letters, and logos carved into it.  That means that you can throw it in the bottom of a tool box or anchor locker, and not worry about the numbers being rubbed or scratched off.

This gauge is also machined using a CNC machine, which produces a consistently accurate product.  Knowing that we live in a global marketplace, it has American sizes on one side, and metric on the other.

Manufacturing will start on January 1st of 2015.  If you'd like to learn more, you may email me at keith@chaingauge.com

Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year !
